The Hook of Holland is a small town in the south-west of Holland. Best known for its function as the destination of the Harwich to Hook of Holland ferry crossing the town itself is actually located on the north bank of the Nieuwe Waterweg (New Waterway) which is a ship canal that was constructed to give deep-water access to the port of Rotterdam when the existing access, via the delta, started to silt up. The delata is the at the confluence of the Rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt. These rivers have always been of vital importance for commerce and shipping as they stretch deep into Europe. The dock for the Rotterdam and Hull ferry is on the opposite, southern bank of the canal, at Europoort. Hook of Holland has an excellent rail service between itself and Rotterdam. Hook of Holland is an unpretentious little town but it does have a beach, sand dunes and a pier. One section of the beach is specifially for the use of naturists. |
