It has a long history as an important seaport and an extensive naval heritage. Its a city of contrasts - old and new. Its history and deveopment is documented, exhibited and archived in no less than 12 museums. Its historic dockyard is not far from one of Portsmouth's newest and most impressive features, the Spinnaker Tower. Its a city for shopping, eating-out, nightlife and numerous other leisure activities. There are many attractions designed with family and children in mind such as the Blue Reef Aquarium and indoor play centre. Nearby Southsea offers all the pleasures of a seaside holiday with promenade, sea and sands. The town contains many fine examples of the residential architecture of Thomas Ellis Owen. Portsmouth offers a great number of other interesting attractions for the visitor including the Victorian Eastney Beam Engine House with its James Watt beam engines.
