Port of Roscoff, France

Roscoff is a small town, on the far north-west coast of France in Brittany (Bretagne), with its granite houses dating back to the 16th century. It is essentially a ferry destination but an attractive and interesting little town in its own right. Historically the town is famous as being the French coastal village from which the traditional onion-sellers, the 'onion Johnnies', in their striped jerseys and black berets berets, would set sail for England and sell their strings of onions as they cycled around the lanes and visited the markets of 19th and early 20th century England. There is now a museum dedicated to the 'Onion Johnny' in Roscoff. The latter years of the 20th century saw Roscoff developed as a ferry destination after the town had a deep water port created. Its importance centres around tourism, the car ferries and the export of agricultural produce. Its other attraction is that it is a pleasant destination for a short stay for shopping trips from the UK to buy duty free goods such as alcohol and tobacco.

There is a pleasant beach not far away from the town itself but the old town around the harbour is of real interest and it is from here that the visior can take a boat trip out to the Ile de Batz.
