Rosslare, Ferries and Ferry CrossingsWelcome to the Rosslare (Republic of Ireland) section of FerryCrossings.org, the site for information about major UK, Eire and continental ports and the ferries between them. Our site includes an introduction to a number of ports and feature pages about the various crossing ways, lanes and routes and companies operating between them to help you plan your journey and discover interesting travel destinations along the way. Port of Rosslare, Republic of Ireland (Eire)Rosslare, in County Wexford, in the south-east corner of Ireland, is a place of 2 distinct characters. The first is as a seaside resort with its beautiful Blue Flag beach and the second as a passenger port providing ferry services to both Wales and Northern France. Historically, Rosslare, in the townland of Ballygeary, is an infant as the port only came into existence with the coming of the railways. With this came the realisation that Ballygeary was only a short distance from the Welsh mainland for cross channel shipping. The first stage was for a rail link to Dublin and this was achieved in the late 1800s. Successful commercial development wasn't immediate and it wasn't until the closing years of the century, when the harbours at both Fishguard and Ballygeary were improved and made deeper so that larger passenger ships could use them, that their full potential was realised. During the 20th century Rosslare has grown into a thriving ferryport in the beautiful county of Wexford. |
